Films
  • 01. Na Un-gyu ( Naungyu Ilsaeng ) Choi Moo-ryong, 1966
This film sheds light on Na Un-gyu, the celebrated director of the film ARIRANG, also recognized as the most representative film director of the Korean people. This biographical film explores the life of Na Un-gyu, who sought to sublimate the sorrows of a people who lost their country through the art of cinema. It depicts how a young man who did not shy away from doing menial jobs at film companies to become the best actor in Korea finally became the best-selling director who represented the sentiments of the Korean People. The film also provides a window into the Korean theater culture of the silent film era, when silent films played with a Byeonsa’s explanation was the norm.  NEW
  • 02. Yun Sim-deok( Yun Sim-deok ) Ahn Hyun-chul, 1969
This film depicts the life and love of Yun Sim-deok, the first soprano singer in Korea. The love story of Yun Sim-seok, a singer who won the public affection with her performance of “Death Song,” and the playwright Kim U-jin, was an interesting material for filmmakers: The singer’s life was cinematized again in the film DEATH SONG by the director Kim Ho-sun in 1991. YUN SIM-DEOK by Ahn Hyun-chul focuses on the triangular relationship among the singer, her lover Kim U-jin, and Park Jeong-sik, another man who had an unrequited love for her, as well as the relationship between Sim-deok, U-jin, and U-jin’s wife. In doing so, the film more emphasizes the tragic romance between Yun Sim-deok and Kim U-jin.  NEW
  • 03. My dear KeumHong(Geumhong-a Geumhong-a) Kim Yu-jin, 1995
This is the story of the Fauvist Western painter Gu Bon-ung, the literary genius Lee Sang who was too much ahead of his time, and Keum Hong, the muse of the two artists. Kim Soo-chul, a singer talented in both music and the cinematic arts, starred as the painter Gu Bon-ung who narrates the film. Lee Sang, the strange genius who mocks the world through his writing, is recreated from the perspective of the painter. This film also cites the essay “Blood-coughing Morning” by Lee Sang, which exhibits the writer’s agony from pneumonia, as well as his other representative works such as “Crow’s Eye View” and “Wings.” The intent such citation is for audience to appreciate the attractive literary style Lee Sang.
