In Seoul in 1938, there lived Jun-sik (Jang Dong-kun), a Korean boy dreaming to become the second Sohn Ki-jung, and Tatsuo (Joe Odagiri) the best marathon runner in Japan. Since their youth, they competed in everything and eventually, they become rivals in track events as representatives of Korea (Choson) and Japan. One day, Jun-sik is dragged into an unexpected trouble and conscripted as a soldier for the Japanese army. A year later, he meets Tatsuo who has become a captain in the Japanese army. The two young men are thrown into the giant maelstrom of the Second World War and become battlefield buddies as they experience endless war from China to Russia, Germany and Normandy. Now begins a human drama of two youths from Korea and Japan, once enemies but now depending on each other for survival.
