Myeong-guk meets Sun-ja when she comes home after finishing her studies in Shanghai. When he finds out that her perspectives on life and living in general are very similar to his own, he falls in love with her. They move in together but when Sun-ja is murdered unexpectedly, Myeong-guk joins a non-profit organization. There, he strives to avenge his wife's death and realize his ideas. This is where he meets his former girlfriend, Shin-jae. When the Japanese police forces begin a harsh roundup and many of his comrades are arrested, he gets engaged to Shin-jae and leaves the country without her for the independence movement.
